Policy Overview
The main aim of the Committee is to continuously review the policies and practices regarding the services offered to persons with intellectual disabilities in Cyprus.
The latter is clearly defined in several sections of article 6 of the 117/1989 Law and amendment 11(I)/2018 for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities.
In order to achieve this goal, the Committee for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities is in constant communication with all the relevant volunteer organizations, ministries and other state services as well as all individuals concerned. As a result of this work, the Committee submits proposals and voices its opinion regarding amendments/ corrective steps concerning current policies/practices. Furthermore, the Committee looks into individual complaints, consults with the necessary parties and seeks to resolve or promote the requests to relevant Departments.
A current review of policies in Cyprus regarding mental handicaps is provided in the Committee’s annual reports (only available in Greek).
